believe me, you cant hate the news more than I do. I'm always told, change the channel, turn it off, leave the room or shut the fuck up when Cook tries to watch it. I hate all that bullshit too, but today while I watched CNN, it was more like just talking. no structure or fake set up questions to the name of the reporter sitting next to them. It seemed more raw than normal news. I know CNN is more conservative, Fox is more liberal, but this didnt seem either way. Now I'm sure in the next few days, that will develope as it always does and then I'll get bitchy about it and give up, but other than local news (which is straight from hell) it was the only way to get information

I've suddenly forgotten what I was talking about

the media is the worst part.... you don't know how much they are sensationalizing, it's all money to them... I'm surprised they haven't thrown some Led Zepplin samples in with their flashy graphics and cool tag lines...
profiting over this situation...just rediculous
I was watching CNN today and the reporter was milking the guy for bad things. He asked him how the bus ride was and the guy replied "It was great...thanks to everybody who helped."
The reporter just stood there for a second and then said "But weren't there lots of problems, etc, etc?"
...and speaking of profiting over this, I think I got a spam email last night. It was from '" or something like that...it was an ad to donate to the red cross because of the hurricane...I hovered over the link in the email, but it was just some random url and not related to red cross. I deleted the email cause I figured it was a virus or spam or something. If that's true, that's just fucked up
For the most part I agree with Chaser. The devestation is what it is, and it's pretty damn bad. The media isn't making that up. Now, do some individual reporters try to focus on the really bad stuff like PH said, absolutely. But, by and large they are still just reporting what people tell them/what they are actually seeing. The "tag lines and music" aside, I personally have yet to see (or hear of) a news outlet report something just completely off the charts.... that was also wrong. Unfortunately, it almost seems as if even the great media machine can't make this any worse than it already is.
I also think that resuce agencies (police, National Guard, FEMA, Red Cross, etc) are doing everything they can, as quickly as they can. As frustrating as it is for the people in need (and to watch), I don't think people are being fair about how difficult this situation is and understanding the supplies and rescues simply can not happen *snap* like that.
The storm pushed through pretty much all day Monday. Monday night and into Tuesday the levees broke and the flood waters were rising, which continued into Wednesday. And now people are being shot at and arson fires started. This is an ongoing disaster. It's not like Katrina went through Monday and then it was all over and everything was clear for the rescue/relief to swoop in.
As someone in the thread asked/wondered aloud earlier, YES, a mandatory evacuation was ordered. And I could be wrong, but I don't think they have ever let anyone "back" since the evacuation order was given - all who are there are people who stayed originally. And even though many (maybe even the majority) who stayed did so because they couldn't leave ($$ or transportation issues), there are some who just chose not to; and now they are having to be rescued, which eats up manpower and supplies. Further, even among those who stayed because they couldn't get out, they should have gone to the Superdome, not stayed in their homes where, once again, they are now having to be resuced.
Though there was a plan in place, this is simply beyond what people expected. Or, as Chaser has said many times, even when you plan for something that AIN'T the same as having to actually carry it out under evolving and dangerous circumstances. I know there are people who have partisan views, don't trust the gov't, etc. But personally I don't believe there is any stalling or failure to act occurring here. This is a NON-partisan tragedy, and I honestly believe everything that can be done to resuce and aid those in need is being done. It is simply more difficult and taking longer than people anticipated.... and hampered by continually evolving factors including the water and lawlessness.
Jesus, it's like slapping a band aid on a bleeding artery - even when you try as hard as you can, sometimes it just isn't enough quickly enough. If you want to "blame" the gov't/planners for anything, I say do so for monumental lack of foresight and/or insufficient planning prior to the storm. But I think it is flat out wrong to imply there is feet dragging going on with the rescue/aid efforts.
All JMO, of course. And whether I question someone's decision to stay or not, I don't think anyone there "deserved" this and I feel incredibly sorry for all those who are suffering.
bah! That Miles The Prick Reporter guy on CNN was trying, pushing, fishing, to get the governor to start placing blame on various offices this morning. Not saying it's unwarrented, just an obvious media prick stunt.
and there's a lot of it... but again, i'm just a cynic..
This whole thing just reminds me of the recent tsunami disaster. I can't help but get the feeling like some news stations want this hurricane to "trump" the tsumani...not saying either situation WASN'T a huge devastation, but I too have seen some reports where they are trying to glorify the carnage rather than simply reporting what's happened.
well I'm glad I got to seem some raw reporting before the jack ass reporter screwed it up. Still where else can you get the info on what is going on unless you watch.
I'm sure if people are willing to loot their neighborhoods and rob and rape their fellow refugees, there are going to be low life scum that try and rip people off that want to help. people are going to have to be carefull on where to send money or items. there was an international number for the red cross shown on tv
The world is a fucked up place sometimes when things are exploited and genuine concern is hampered with anything that provides misinformation. I think at the very beginning of some disasters they might be unable to put their greed into motion and spin the facts. dont get me wrong, it wont take the leeches much time to get a hold of it and take over.
Where else can footage be seen? where else can you get any facts that arent manipulated? I'm not sure I know of a place.
